According to the Chautauqua County Visitor's Bureau, Chautauqua County produces over 65% of New York's annual grape harvest with over 20,000 vineyard acres.  Concords have thrived in this Lake Erie microclimate for over a century with Catawba and Niagara grapes.  French-American hybrids first planted in the 60's and 70's include Vidal, Seyval, and Chancellor.  Additional vineyards are devoted to European vinifera varieties such as Merlot, Chardonnay, and Riesling.  Chautauqua's vintners produce a range of sweet to dry wines, including popular Ice Wine, brandies, and Champagne.  Visit each of the 21 wineries along the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail to choose your own favorite varieties.
